In December 2011 we began performing TransNasal Endoscopy (TNE) as an office procedure. Here I am as the first patient!

TransNasal Endoscopy (TNE) is a new kind of endoscopy that is safer, shorter, and very well tolerated compared to conventional sedated endoscopy (EGD). After local anesthetic spray to the nasal passages, an ultra-thin endoscope is passed via the nose, rather than the mouth, through the esophagus and into the stomach.
Transnasal endoscopy avoids the common side effects of conventional (through the mouth) gastroscopy such as gagging, retching and nausea because the transnasal approach minimizes contact with the tongue - therefore no sedation is needed.
The advantages of transnasal endoscopy are:
- No need to be accompanied for the test
- No sedation required.
- Less gagging or retching
- Quick recovery
- Can return to work straight away
- Driving a car, operating machinery, drinking alcohol allowed after test
- You are able to watch the procedure live and have an immediate discussion of endoscopy findings.
- For the surgeon, a more natural perspective on esophageal function and evaluation of hiatal hernia.
